"For as often as you take this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." 1 Corinthians 11:26
A Call for Dependence
"...apart from Me, you can do nothing." John 15:5
The Spirit of 76, or the Spirit of Independence, has long been celebrated by the American people in remembrance of our founding fathers who framed and fought for the Declaration of Independence which dissolved their allegiance and political connection to the state of Great Britain thus forming the United States of America. While we continue to celebrate the birth of this great nation and honor the lives of those who have fought and died for its freedoms, we also grieve the atrocities that have been committed within our borders. However, this spirit of independence that was once harnessed for the freedom from tyranny, has now enslaved us.
The modern spirit of independence has permeated the Church and our nation. It has fueled divisions and denominational schisms among the people of God and it has bred the lie among our nation that true freedom is possible apart from God. It is this modern spirit of independence, or humanism, that is tormenting us in this hour.
To combat this evil, we are calling the Body of Christ in America to join us as we repent of this spirit of independence and make a public Declaration of Dependence upon God, our Father, the saving work of His Son Jesus Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. In addition to this, we are acknowledging our need for reconciliation among the Body of Christ that is only possible through our common faith and bond found at the Lord's Table.
Declaration of Forgiveness
"And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” John 20:22-23
How do we apply the blood of Jesus to the sins of our nation? Does the Church have this kind of authority? When Jesus gave his disciples the Holy Spirit, he also gave them authority to forgive people of their sins. The climax of our Communion Celebration will be a Declaration of Forgiveness that we proclaim over our nation, not counting men's trespasses against them and allowing God to make his appeal through us, BE RECONCILED TO GOD! (2 Corinthians 5:18-21)
